It's natural for only a proportion of franchisees to succeed. Is the proportion normal? The negative posts would have us believe the vast majority are sure to fail.

The SMH articles in particular seem like downramp-fests - complaining about anything that they can. They only quote failed franchisees, who are sure to want to complain, as they would have lost money because of the failure. Though I ask again, are the failure/success rates normal? If it's normal, then the articles are complaining for the sake of complaining.

However, in Michel's case, it does seem like a worryingly high failure rate at the moment with lots of planned closures. Is this due to management or changing consumer trends?

SMH quoted a reviews site giving a bad score to Michel's. I read some reviews, and lots of the bad reviews were complaining about the employees rather than things under direct management control. SMH would have us believe the bad score is because of management.

Eg. customer received a cake with batman instead of spiderman, were unhappy with the employee response after they complained, then vowed to not come back again.

Can management help that? Barely, but possible partly, if the employees need better training, or if management were too lax when accepting new franchisees.

Michels in particular is a tired and irrelevant brand. Who knows anyone that wakes up in the morning and shouts WOOHOO lets go to Michels!
